The humidity cycle that makes timber move, why easing a door in August is the wrong month to do it, and the fixes that hold year round.
Timber and board absorb moisture from the air and expand. Air-conditioned interiors sit at low humidity for most of the year, while the outside air in July and August is heavily loaded with moisture. Every door, wardrobe and cabinet in a UAE property lives across that boundary.
So a door hung with minimal clearance in a cool February binds in a humid August, and a door eased aggressively in August rattles in February. The fix is knowing which of those two situations you are in.
Where the door binds tells you almost everything.
| Where it binds | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Top of latch side | Hinge sag or loose top hinge screws | Refix or replace hinges, pack if needed |
| Latch side, full height | Seasonal swelling or frame movement | Adjust hinges first, plane only if it persists in winter |
| Bottom edge | Swelling from mopping, or floor change | Trim and seal the bottom edge |
| Latch will not engage | Door dropped or strike plate out of position | Realign strike plate |
| Everywhere, suddenly | Frame distortion | Frame assessment before touching the door |
Planing a door in August is how you end up with a drafty, rattling door in January. Timber that has swollen seasonally will shrink back.
The correct sequence is: tighten and adjust hinges first, check and realign the strike plate second, and only remove material if the binding persists once humidity falls. If it must be planed in summer, remove the minimum and seal the exposed edge immediately, because bare timber absorbs moisture faster than sealed timber.
The single most common defect we find in UAE joinery is an unsealed bottom edge. It costs nothing to seal at manufacture and is the reason a great many wardrobe and bathroom doors swell within two years.
Almost always. Hinge adjustment, strike plate realignment and edge sealing are typically a single visit under our handyman service, from AED 299.
Repair, unless the door is delaminating, water damaged at the bottom or the frame itself has distorted. Most binding is a hinge or clearance issue rather than a failed door.
Wardrobe doors are usually board rather than solid timber, and board reacts faster to humidity. Soft-close hinges also drift out of adjustment and are quick to reset.
Yes. We design, fabricate and install fitted wardrobes and storage, with moisture-resistant substrate where the location needs it and all faces sealed.
