In short

Hot water extraction, dry compound and encapsulation compared, why fiber testing comes first, and what causes the streaks and shrinkage people fear.

Upholstery and carpet are the largest filters in any property. Every particle of dust, skin cell, pet hair and airborne cooking oil that circulates through the rooms eventually settles into the fiber, and vacuuming lifts only what has not yet bonded.

The result is fabric that looks flat, feels slightly greasy and holds odor long after the room itself has been cleaned. Which method fixes it depends entirely on what the fabric is made of.

The three methods

MethodHow it worksBest forDrying
Hot water extractionHeated solution injected and immediately vacuumed back outSynthetic upholstery, wall-to-wall carpet, heavy soiling4 to 6 hours with air movers
Dry compoundAbsorbent compound worked into the fiber, then vacuumed awayVelvet, silk, linen, natural-fiber rugs, same-day useUsable almost immediately
EncapsulationPolymer crystallizes around soil, then is vacuumed outCommercial carpet, maintenance cleaning between deep cleans1 to 2 hours

Why fiber testing comes first

Velvet, silk, viscose and some natural-fiber rugs will watermark, shrink or bleed if treated with the wrong method. Once that happens it cannot be undone.

  • Fiber type, backing and construction identified on every piece
  • Care labels read and photographed where present
  • A discreet spot test in a hidden area (under a cushion, behind a skirt) left to dry before the main clean
  • Pre-existing wear and damage noted with you before starting

Any company that starts spraying without doing this is gambling with your furniture.

Why results sometimes disappoint

  • Streaks and rapid re-soiling. Detergent residue left in the fiber. A clear rinse pass prevents it; skipping the rinse is the most common corner cut.
  • Wicking (stains returning as it dries). Contamination deep in the padding rises with the moisture. It needs deeper treatment, not more surface cleaning.
  • Shrinkage. Too much moisture on a natural fiber. This is a method selection failure.
  • Odor returning. Pet odor usually sits in the backing and padding, not the surface fabric. Enzyme treatment at that depth is required.

How often

  • Typical household: every 12 months
  • Pets, small children or heavy daily use: every 6 months
  • Holiday homes and short-let apartments: between guest cycles, or at minimum quarterly
  • Mattresses: every 6 to 12 months

Fabric protection applied after cleaning is worth considering. It does not make fabric immune, but it buys time to blot a spill before it becomes a stain, and it noticeably slows soil bonding in traffic areas.

Questions & Answers

Common questions

With hot water extraction and air movers, four to six hours. Dry compound cleaning leaves the fabric usable almost immediately, which is why we favor it for delicate materials and same-day requirements.

Not when the method matches the fiber, which is exactly why we test first. Velvet, silk, linen and natural-fiber rugs are cleaned with low-moisture methods specifically to avoid it.

Usually yes, because we treat the backing and padding where the odor actually sits, using enzyme-based products that break down the source rather than masking it.

Yes for many curtain types. Heavily soiled, lined or delicate curtains give a better result through take-down, workshop cleaning and rehanging, which we also offer.
